4.25 | In Theory

4.25 In Theory | To me, this will always be one of the more heartbreaking episodes. The title says it all. In theory, he and Jenna were supposed to work. In theory, his experiment would have been successful. In theory, he would have been able to have a functioning human relationship. Never have Data’s clinical approaches to humanity failed more. It broke my heart to see him try so hard and just not grasp the concept of affection on the most basic level. And there’s no neat resolution, no punchline at the end of the episode — just the final scene of Data alone in his room as Jenna walks out. And though, as viewers, we’re supposed to believe that he is devoid of all emotion…I feel a profound sense of loneliness from him as the final scene fades to black.
